Bishop Porteus Library at Fulham Palace
The renovations to the Bishop Porteous Library at Fulham Palace are almost complete. The Fulham Society donated the new book security measures and these are now installed. The old wiring had caused damage to books, was unsightly and did not work properly. The library can now safely welcome visitors knowing the books will be kept safe and are being properly conserved.
We look forward to visiting the library and hearing more of its history and future plans.
The Library is named after Bishop Beilby Porteus (1731 -1809), who left a plan, his own books and a bequest for a new library. Previously the chapel, the room was converted in 1814, using his bequest. Fulham Palace wanted to bring the Library back to life by presenting it as it appeared in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and to use it once again as a comfortable library-cum-drawing room where visitors can sit and read or chat.
The museum, shop and historic rooms at Fulham Palace are currently closed but the gardens remain open. https://www.fulhampalace.org
